Meet Trevi

Last week we learned about a little history about Rome and how ‘grand’ the city is, was, and will ever be. And now we’re back for another week of blogging; it’s another post and another chance to learn something from all this talking (we hope). So now… meet Trevi. No. Trevi is not a person or a pet or anything you could think of. Trevi is a fountain.

The Trevi Fountain stands 85 feet tall and 65 feet wide in the Trevi Rione in Rome, Italy. Trevi is the largest Baroque fountain and is also one of the most famous fountains not only in Italy but in the entire world.

It was said that the Trevi was founded by a woman (a virgin) led Roman technicians to a source of pure water. Originally, it was expected to provide an 8-mile long source of fresh and pure water but due to an indirect route, the aqueduct’s length reached up to 14 miles. Reaching to the baths of Agrippa, the Trevi served Rome for 400 years.

The current face of the Trevi has a lot of things to be attributed in the past. For one, the Trevi aqueducts were broken down due to a coup. Because of it, the Romans were left with no choice but to get polluted and contaminated water. However, during the renaissance period, the fountain was restored.

Trevi also had a taste of restoration last 1998 wherein the stonework was scrubbed and they added recirculating pumps on the fountain.

The design on the fountain is also notably remarkable. Its rich history can be clearly found on its carvings – an art molded by different ideas from different art geniuses. It was said that the fountain’s design started with the rough sketches of Gian Lorenzo Bernini as requested by Pope Urban VIII. When the pope died, Bernini’s plans and designs also died with it. Still, the fountain reflects some of Bernini’s art. The fountain’s design reflects a combined design of Pietro da Cortona, Nicola Michett, Ferdinando Fuga, Edme Bouchardon, the controversial Nicola Salvi, and Giuseppe Pannini who finished the design job for the fountain.

Today, the Trevi fountain is one of the main attractions in Rome. A lot of tourist come and see the Trevi fountain all year round. If you’re going to witness the beauty of the Trevi fountain, then everything is accessible around it. There are a lot of businesses surrounding the place including hotels, apartments, and vacation rentals. Aside from that, your stay would be worth it since there are also a lot of attractions surrounding the place.

The Grandeur that was Rome

Often, Rome is associated with its history. A lot of Roman Empires, their leaders and their stories on how they failed and conquered has been known to many; written in lots of pages in history books through knowledge passed on from generation to generation. It is undeniable that Rome was indeed grand not only in history but also even up to its existence until today.

It may not be completely clear why the phrase The Grandeur that was Rome was created, but seeing Rome through time and still shine among all other cities would just prove that probably, whoever authored that line (presumably Edgar Allan Poe’s poem Helen) has seen what Rome has been, has become, and will ever be – GRANDIOUS not only on its history, but also its beauty.

Beauty is something Rome also happens to be rich at. Its luscious city is wrapped with enthralled pieces of its history that are now many of its tourist attractions. When people usually destroy the old and build something new to attract foreigners, Rome has done the opposite. It kept and preserved and maintained what was left of the city through time and made it the highlight of their city’s nature and culture.

Among the best tourist and historic attractions in Rome are: The Colosseum – the largest monument that exists in the Imperial Rome; The Roman Forum – the focal point of Republican Rome; The Pantheon – Italy’s best preserved ancient building; The Capitoline Hill – where a great view welcomes you and amuses you like no other; Piazza Navona – lively piazza surrounded by lovely and lively cafes; Villa Borghese – houses lots of famous sculptures and paintings; Saint Peter’s Basilica – the largest Roman Catholic building; and Vatican Museums – the largest museum complex which houses 3000 years worth of Roman art.

Rome has become one the most visited cities that there was an increase of demand for different business establishments to arise. Bars, restaurants, diners, cafes, souvenir shops, inns, lodging houses, and apartments in Rome have filled the city. This made Rome not only the center of history and tourist destinations, but also a center of commerce.

Whatever angle it may be, once a city is rich of something, be it on history or the nature’s wonders and beauty or maybe even both, the place would really be booming and – to connect to what Rome was called for – grand. If the Romans would take good care of what they have kept important for the past centuries, it would also keep its radiance and beauty to the world.
