The Simple (But FUN) Stuff in Rome

There are actually a lot of activities that you could enjoy doing in Rome. It's not just about the tourist attractions or the museums or what history could bring out of Rome that might interest tourists. There are actually a lot of recreational activities that tourists and natives could enjoy around Rome.

Here are some of the recreational activities you can enjoy on your upcoming (or next) visit to Rome:

Golf
The weather in Rome is best for golfing. It's sunny but it's not too warm. It is also breezy or cool enough to compliment the sunny weather. There are many golf clubs around Rome that you can visit and enjoy a game of golf. There are really huge ones in some hotels (or near them).

If you're a traveler, you don't need to worry about equipment. Golf clubs have equipment for rent and even inclusive on the rent you pay. You can easily enjoy some leisure time on your trip.

Bike Tours
Remember when we said that Rome is best appreciated by foot? If you don't... well, let us refresh your minds.

Rome is best traveled and seen by foot. Whether you walk or bike around, you would appreciate the place and the scenery more. There's this fulfilling feeling inside you once you traveled around with your feet.

In most cases, people go around in bikes. It's a form of great exercise, easy transportation, and quality travel around the city.

Time Elevator
Although Rome might sound ancient and old, but it doesn't mean it doesn't have the latest technology around it. The Time Elevator would prove that.

The Time Elevator would take a person to a 4D timeline travel of Rome's history. It features realistic audio and video to the guests. If you're not much of a fan of museums and exhibits, this would be the perfect timeline ride for you. It's fun, it's techie, and it's learning the history of Rome all in one.

Sightseeing Bus Tours
If seeing Rome by feet is quite impossible (by health or age limitations, maybe), then taking a tour bus is one good way to enjoy the city.

The rooftop deck of the bus is where the best seats are. There, you could easily see the view with a touch of the sun on your skin. You can see the buildings up high and down below. While you're on the tour bus, a tour guide would give you information on every sight you see.

Carriage Rides
And for those who would love a brand of thrill in their adventure, carriages are ready to take you to a creative ride to Rome.

Just like all the other means of tours around Rome, the carriage rides are also fun and enjoyable. It's also one simple way to go around Rome and see all the beautiful wonders there is.

So what are you waiting for after knowing all these? Go and book an accommodation in Rome now to experience the adventure in this lovely city. Rome apartments in Colosseum are easy to find and are situated near tourist spots. Most Rome apartment rentals in Colosseum are also affordable and are great finds.

The Good Old Times

We all know that Rome is known for the best delicacies. Knowing that Rome is in Italy (yeah, that’s basic geography, we know), we also know that the food served would always be tasty and of its best. Just think of pizza and pasta and all its yummy goodness.

But did any of us know what the people in ancient Rome have been eating back when pasta and pizza weren’t on its top list yet? If you ask us… nope, we didn’t know it yet – not until today. So here we are scribbling what we know about the ancient food in ancient Rome.

During the ancient times, Roman meals revolved around corn, wine, and oil. The elite ones, however, enjoy exotic foods aside from the staple ones. Fish and oysters were rich source of protein while those who could afford meat enjoy pork. Other sources of protein include some exotic food like snails and dormice.

Pastries were already present during ancient times. Together with tarts and cakes, pastries were sweetened with honey. They were made available commercially and were even made in every household.

Ironic as it may seem, although the great and tasty food were available right then and there, but vegetables and fruits were imported.

The basic order of meal among Romans was breakfast, dinner (which is the largest meal of the day) and a small supper. Eventually, they changed the order of their meals to breakfast, light lunch then dinner.

The rich and the poor have different kinds of meal in a day. Those who could afford have three courses per meal: an appetizer (basically consists of egg, fish, or raw vegetables), main course (consists of vegetables and meat), and lastly, desert consisting of fruits and pastries. Those who barely have anything eat porridge or bread with meat and vegetables.

Foods were cooked in a different way. Most of the times, it is cooked in an open fire with a little hole at the top of the kitchen to give room for smoke to flow out of the house. Cauldrons were either hanged by chains or seated on gridirons. Pastries, however, were cooked in circular dome ovens.

Most Romans sat upright when eating. The elite usually have recliners and have dinner parties outdoors. On the other hand, food was eaten with their fingers and was cut down using a knife. Spoons were used to eat eggs and other liquids.

On the other hand, if you're visiting Rome, you can try some of our accommodations in Rome. There are great vacation rentals in Rome in Piazza Navona. And you know where to log on the net when you're looking for apartment in Rome. :) See you online and we hope you'll share your travel stories with us.

Getting Physical the Roman Way

When it comes to greatness and strength, the Romans have something to brag about that. Even centuries ago, the Roman Empire and artillery have shown such courage and might in battle and war. Besides that, Romans (like the Greeks) are also known for its strength in sports. This was never taken for granted by the Romans because every year, they give importance to sports and sportsmanship with its yearly celebration of Ludi Romani.

Ludi Romani, which means ‘Roman Games’, started out as a religious festival during the ancient Rome. Through time, it has evolved into something more than just a religious festival. Around 1st century B.C., Roman drama was introduced to the festival. These dramas, however, were based on Greek ones.

Through the course of time, games were incorporated in the said festival. These games were made in honor of Jupiter on his conquest of the Latin Apiolae. During that time, no triumph or victory is inclined in the games. If you come to think of it, it’s just like playing for fun and for fun alone.

Fast forward to the present, the Ludi Romani is celebrated by many Romans in different ways. Some make silly games for fun. Some makes it a bit of a competition thing. Some (especially in school) compete both for the mind and the body by having quiz bowls and other physical games later.

The Ludi Romani is a popular festival in Rome even today. They celebrate it every September (sometimes, the entire month) and have series of activities for the festival. And since it is already halfway of the month, you probably have heard of it now. It is currently going on and Romans are currently having fun.

But don’t fret! You haven’t missed it yet.

If you want to witness this event, the best thing to do is visit Rome. If you’re currently in Rome, then why not join the festivities? Don’t worry about a lot of things to prepare for travel. Accommodations in Rome are everywhere and are affordable. There are a lot of Trastevere apartments in Rome which a lot of travelers usually book and stay in while they are in Rome. These Rome vacation rentals perfect for you and your entire stay in Rome as you witness the Ludi Romani.

All Alone but Never Lonely

Okay. So maybe you're thinking of traveling alone. Nothing wrong with that - you can totally do that wherever you want to go. Traveling doesn't really require a 'buddy', right? And if you're totally comfortable with it, then, why not?

But sometimes people are quite doubtful of traveling alone. We don't want you to undergo that. That's just sad and unlucky. Here's what's happy and lucky! Here are some tips we would like to impart to you when you want to travel alone. Rest assured, we designed each one to make things comfortable and safe for your travel.

Go Italiano in a day

Language barriers could ruin a trip. When you're in a foreign land and people don't speak much English (or perhaps you don't speak their language that well), things could go crazy. For example, you're asking for directions. You speak in English. They pretend they understand. And they will answer you in ways you wouldn't know was not right. Or probably you speak Italian, but didn't get it right. Then they interpret it another way. So they answer you wrongly.

The point is, when you travel, you should try to learn at least the basic of the language especially in basic manners and basic questions you need to ask when traveling. May it be asking for directions, time, cost - anything. So here, we made a little list of the basic Italian words you should know when you get to Rome.

Traveling Rome and Their Stories

Every travel or tour experience have their stories. Every story started from something that sparked that very decision to travel. May it be around the globe or just a mere visit down the neighborhood. When you go and travel, there is that WANT or NEED to be at that certain place. Reasons may be different, but all the same, there are reasons - good or bad. And whatever that reason may be, it leads to a story.

We gathered a few different stories on their travel in Rome. Each experience tells us a story on how and why they got to that situation and how it affected them in the end. We share to you direct quotes from traveler's own account and let's see if any of these experiences would somehow relate to you.

Here's a romantic story about two people who met in a hostel in Rome:
"But then, one evening, after a long day of sightseeing, my friends and I happened upon John and his friend eating in the communal kitchen. They seemed nice enough, so we sat down to join them. We talked for a long time, and I remember thinking that it was terribly unfortunate to meet such a wonderful guy all the way in Rome. ...
...I moved across the country for a man I’d met completely by chance in a horribly sketchy hostel in Rome. Now, five years later, we are happily married and enjoy reminiscing about our happenstance meeting."

Here's another story. This time, it's a hilarious one!
"We climbed the few steps that would allow us passage through to the inner area of the square and then it was as if an alarm went off. As soon as our feet stepped into the open area of St. Peter's Square, a torrential downpour, the likes of which I believe may be compared to a Category 5 Hurricane opened up and sent the visitors to Vatican City running for cover. ...
...Kevin and I looked at each other and gave a nervous laugh. I don’t know if we will ever give the old joke about our less than spectacular attendance at church again, you know the old, "We are worried if we walk in, the walls will tumble down on us." Because when you think about it, they just might."

And this one is quite an unfortunate one. May this not happen to you.
"From impossible transfers to breaking the language barriers, backpacking in Europe can build stress and heartache.  While I backpacked for a month, the journey was exciting, whimsical, and amazing.  But, only one problem haunts me today and I swore after it occurred, I would inform future backpackers about the so called "Italian Transportation System" that failed, disappointed, and pissed me off."

So whatever your story may be, share it with us! We might publish it here on our blog.

On the other hand, if you're visiting Rome, you can try some of our accommodations in Rome. There are great vacation rentals in Rome in Piazza Navona. And you know where to log on the net when you're looking for apartment in Rome. :) See you online and we hope you'll share your travel stories with us.

Rome for Cheap

BUDGET. It's one of the biggest things to consider when you go on travel. With a budget so tight, you think your travel will be so limited you might as well not go there because you might just not have fun. Well, worry-wart, the keyword there was THINK, MIGHT, and YOU. In short, it's just your state of mind.

In reality, there could be a way that you will have a great time in a travel - however limited your budget is. It's just a matter of looking for cheap accommodations, great fare or flight deals, tasty but affordable restaurants, and taking a whole new perspective of what a tourist spot is.

Accommodations in Rome are not that scarce. Actually, there's a lot of them. But there are only a few, like some Rome vacation rentals in Trastevere, which are cheap but gives you a nice comfortable feeling when you sleep. Just make sure that when you choose the perfect Rome vacation rental, see to it that it's near most of the other places you need access to. For example, restaurants, bus stations, tourist spots, market, grocery, etc. The nearer it is to everything, the bigger savings you would get since you don't need to ride anymore.

Speaking of ride, one thing that eats up the biggest part of your budget are your plane tickets. They cost a fortune, don't they? The biggest secret to having cheap flights are looking for promos and booking them ahead. Nobody ever went wrong with saving money in booking ahead. With other means of transportation, take the public transit. If not, walk. Walking would make you appreciate the place more. And that's our next savings tip.

Walk around. The best scenes of the place are not really on fancy places with exorbitant entrance fees. Walk around and you will see the beauty of the place. Go to museums with cheap entrance fees or even those which are for free. Go to plazas, or famous landmarks without spending too much.

And speaking of spending too much, FOOD is often one thing that we spend too much on. But you can always look for restaurants which doesn't cost that much but would still give you the taste of Rome. Trattorias are one of them. Great food without paying great, huge price.

So with all these in mind, do you think you're ready for some a budget-tight vacation? Well, you better be. Just make sure that the best thing to do to get the best out of your vacation is simply to enjoy and have fun.

Grazie a voi, lettori di!

An Italian proverb says "La gratitudine è la memoria del cuore." (Gratitude is the memory of the heart.)

This is how we exactly feel on our 12th post on this blog. It's like no one among our readers would ever know how thankful we are to have reached 3 months of posting some posts on Rome and traveling. Thankful because, however unclear to us if we have a lot of readers or not, we know that people read it. We are thankful because we are given this chance to impart to people what we know and what we could offer.

So we thank everybody who's been reading our blogs (both this and our Paris blog) - we all do hope you get a lot of information from everything we post here. We always try our best to give you more information about everything in Rome just to make sure you are well-equipped with information in your pockets when you visit the place.

Most of all, we thank you for trusting us as you accommodation in Rome. Most of are Steps, Termini, and Trastevere apartments in Rome were doing great and your support contributed to it a lot. This is not only it. The rest of our Rome vacation rentals in all other key places in the city have been getting much of your support too. So there's nothing more that we could say but thank you.

More and more posts would be coming from us... as always. Until the next one!

Sidenote: We're doing the same THANK YOU thing in our Paris blog. Just a little touch of difference but all of the gratitude is still there. :)

Another P.S.: Just a little serving for you guys... this message translated to Italian? Possible. See below:

The NOTs in Rome

Since in our Paris blog we talked about "what not to do", we think it is just and fair to talk about the same thing in our Rome blog. After all, these two cities are not that far from each other when it comes to enjoyment and to beauty in travel and tours.

So what are the things that one traveler should avoid while in Rome? Just like our Paris blog, we gathered every information we could get on this matter and collated everything and chose 5 among the many. So are you ready? Here we go.

First, DON'T GO TO THE COLOSSEUM WITHOUT SUNBLOCK.Apply a generous amount of sun protection on your skin and bring wide-brimmed hats or anything that would protect you from the sun. The place is not known for having lots of shades and the weather gets pretty hot. Just a little sunburn precaution.

DON'T GIVE MONEY TO GYPSIES. This is a general rule, not only in Rome, but also in other places where there are people begging for money. Don't ever give a single penny. We understand... maybe you just really feel sympathy and would love to help even just for a little. But you should also know that when you give money to one, the rest of the flock would follow.

Another thing to take note - DON'T DINE NEAR THE TRAIN STATION. Never. The food are mostly overpriced and you would wonder why because they don't taste and look exemplary. It's like spending a lot for nothing. Go and look for a good diner or restaurant. At least if it is a bit costly, it would be worth it.

DON'T BE OFFENDED BY CATCALLS FROM MEN. If you're not too accustomed with this, don't react violently. These are taken as compliments in Italy. When men catcalls you, it means they admired something in you. If you ignore them, they will stop eventually.

Lastly, DON'T KEEP ON BUYING BOTTLED WATER. You can buy one but you can just reuse the bottle and refill it with drinking fountains. You might be concerned about the cleanliness of the water but trust us when we say it is safe. Everybody in Rome drinks from their fountains. So instead of wasting your money on bottled waters, save with the drinking fountains instead.

Now we're done telling you what NOT to do in Rome. It's time to tell you WHAT TO DO. Go and book an accommodation in Rome now to experience the adventure in this lovely city. Rome apartments in Colosseum are easy to find and are situated near tourist spots. Most Rome apartment rentals in Colosseum are also affordable and are great finds.

So go ahead... DO and DO NOT do these stuff to enjoy one great vacation in Rome.

Rome on the 4th

The Fourth of July. It's probably one of the biggest celebrations in the world. This date marks the declaration of independence of United States from the Great Britain. It is one of the most celebrated events by Americans all over the globe. Why wouldn't it be? When you talk about your countries independence, it would really mean a lot to you wherever you may be. Therefore, this event has not only be a celebration celebrated within the constricts of United States but worldwide - wherever there are proud, patriotic American citizens who carry with them the American pride.

It wouldn't be surprising to know that even in Rome (or in Italy in totality), people celebrate the Fourth of July. There are special celebrations around and they observe it like how most of American does it in US. So if you're around Rome on the 4th, you can get the perfect apartment in Rome for you. Just so you know, there are great accommodations in Rome in Piazza Navona. It would be perfect and it would be really nice if you stay more than a day in the place (other than just the Fourth of July). After all, the Rome holiday apartment in Piazza Navona are made affordable for short or long stays. Surely there's more to the 4th that you would want to enjoy so you might want to stay there longer.

So how does Rome, Italy celebrate the fourth?

It's simple. It's more on outdoor activities. There would probably be a little commemoration at the American Embassy before all the festivities started. Then afterwards, people go out and go have a picnic, some barbecue, and other outdoor activities.

But one thing's for sure, just like any other celebration, the Fourth of July comes with fireworks. On July 2, Saturday, there would be a huge fireworks showdown in commemoration of the Fourth of July. Here are the details for the event:

When and Where
Saturday, July 2, 2011- 7 p.m.

Braves Blvd NE
Rome, GA 30161

Use Thy Feet

For the past two blogs, we've all been talking about food in Rome. If you've done that (or if you could just imagine we did all those food trips), you probably have gone way too far your waistline. Oops!

So we do hope that you don't mind a little "exercise" to that. Probably with food and a bit of exercise combined, you wouldn't worry about your clothes shrinking on you. It just so happened that, aside from great food, Rome is also famous for one of the best tourist activities one should enjoy.

If you want a well-guided but fun and enjoyable tours around the city of Rome, you could use your feet. Yes, you heard that right - FEET. For in Rome, cycling and walking around the city to discover its beautiful sceneries is one of the things tourists enjoy.

Let's say you have stay in a great accommodation in Rome. You can start from there and go on a tour like you have never imagined it. There are tour agencies which offers you a biking tour around the city. You could choose between going around the city in a guided tour with a group of tourists or you could go and rent a bike and just go cycling around the city yourself.

What's good about the guided bike tour is that you will never get lost in the outskirts of Rome. You are with a group of people and you have a tour guide that would take you to key destinations of the city. It's basically like an ordinary guided city tour - but on bicycle.

But biking by yourself has an advantage, too. You are the boss of your own time and the boss of your own itinerary. If you know how to read maps or if you've been to the place before, you can surely make your way around the city without getting lost. Or (if in case you will indeed get lost - we hope not!) you could discover new twists and turns around the city. Who knows, you would discover a short cut!

Aside from biking around Rome, walking is also one of the famous activities in the city. People who just want to walk around from point to point can simple enjoy the breathtaking view of the city without compromising to traffic jams. Plus, it's a good amount of exercise, too.

So now you have many options on what to do in Rome. If you got a Rome apartment in Campo de Fiori, there are a lot of bikes for rent near there. Rome apartment rentals in Campo de Fiori are of acceptable and reasonable price - perfect enough for that budget-tight getaway to fit with your biking or hiking experience.

Torn Between Two... Sauces?

Last week, we talked about the famous pastas, pasta ingredients and pasta recipes in Rome. We started the post telling the people of how Italy has influenced global dining with two sumptuous foods that they offered the world. Pizza and Pasta. Since we’re done talking about pasta, we’ll talk about pizza this time.

Although pizza is also known in the vast United States, it is made popular in Italy. It’s true, the Americans are huge consumers of pizza. They order tons of them when they have a movie (with pizza) night, sleepovers, or if they totally feel depressed and heartbroken that they need to shove a slice down their throats. Kidding!

But yeah, pizza is famous anywhere. People make different sort of variety and kinds and probably… sizes. However, people would surely agree that Italy’s pizzas are the best. They are served fresh and the ingredients are really healthy. There are no other artificial ingredients on it whatsoever. So pizzas in Italy are simply the best.

So we go to Rome and what it could offer – no question they could offer you the best pizza. So what’s the best pizza to get in Rome?

When you order pizza in a pizzeria around Rome, they’re probably going to ask… Rossa or Bianca? Let me bring to you the bad news, though, that they are not referring to women (sorry). Rossa and Bianca are two sauces they use in their pasta – rossa is red sauce, and bianca is white sauce. This is important since some pizza toppings would not match to the taste of tomato sauce. Cheeses, for example, are best without tomato sauce.

Another pizza that you might want to try is Pizza al Taglio. This pizza is more of elongated and with thicker crust. When you look for one in Rome, usually it’s those smaller shops with longer lines. But I’m telling you, it is worth the standing and waiting.

So if you want the best and healthiest pizza, try the ones in Rome. There are a lot of pizzerias in the entire city so you don’t need to worry on where to go. When you’re on a vacation and when you’re touring, when your tummy rumbles, then go get a pizza.

And if you’re staying overnight in the city, you can check out a lot of vacation rentals in Rome. There are a lot of great vacation rentals in Paris in Piazza Navona which are affordable and nice. (FYI there are a lot of great pizzeria in Piazza Navona).  Some Rome holiday apartment in Piazza Navona also would make you feel comfortable and at home while staying at the place.

So go visit Rome now and enjoy an delicious slice of pizza on your stay.

Hmmmmamma Mia!

Food. That's always one thing people look forward to when visiting a place. Aside from tourist spots, events, and the rest of the country's culture, food is one of the things a country or city could offer to its tourists that would keep them coming back for more.

As for Rome, a city in Italy, the great tasting food was never a question. Italy is rich in sumptuous meals, anyway. So when you visit Rome, always, always try the food.

Two of the most famous specialties that Italy brought to the world are pizza and pasta. Imagine the influence of pizza anywhere in the worlds. Imagine how many people would love to eat them, would love to have one being delivered to their doorstep, would love to just take a slice and more and more.

And imagine how huge pasta has been. There's not only one kind - there are many. Aside from different pastas, there are also different kinds of sauces that comes with it. And oh! Don't forget. There are many ways to cook a pasta.

But food in Italy would depend on which part of the country you are in. Each city would have their delicacy out of what is Italy best known for. In the case for Rome, there’s a different kind of pasta that Rome serves best.

There are certain kinds of pastas that is prevalent in Rome – bucatini and tonnarelli. Tonnarelli is a thicker version of spaghetti while bucatini is a long pasta (still a bit thicker than spaghetti but has a hole in the center). These two pastas are what Rome serves best. If you can find a restaurant that serves these pastas, then you better get this.

Other than pastas, there are also some secret ingredients that Roman pasta has. These are pecorino (a Roman cheese made from sheep’s milk) and guanciale (meet from a pig’s cheek). You might want these ingredients on your pasta for that perfect Roman pasta.

Moreover, there are certain great pasta recipes which are served in various restaurants in Rome. So if you’re planning to visit the city, try to have Bucatini all’ Amatriciana, Bucatini alla gricia, Rigatoni con Pajata , Pasta alla Coda Vaccinara and many more pasta recipes that are bestsellers in Rome.

And if you’re visiting the place, why not look for the best accommodations in Rome? Try this accommodation in Rome in Trastevere. It's clean, safe, affordable, and with great service. This Rome apartment in Trastevere would surely bring you a great time in the city.

P.S.
You might be looking for the “pizza” part… let’s save that talk for next week’s blog. J
