All Alone but Never Lonely

Okay. So maybe you're thinking of traveling alone. Nothing wrong with that - you can totally do that wherever you want to go. Traveling doesn't really require a 'buddy', right? And if you're totally comfortable with it, then, why not?

But sometimes people are quite doubtful of traveling alone. There are the fears and doubts of getting lost alone and being fooled around by people who would like to take advantage of your tag as a 'traveler' (you know how some would take advantage of you when they know you're a foreigner and barely knows anything of the place).

We don't want you to undergo that. That's just sad and unlucky. Here's what's happy and lucky! Here are some tips we would like to impart to you when you want to travel alone. Rest assured, we designed each one to make things comfortable and safe for your travel.

  1. Know you way. Research on the most reliable way possible on how to get around the place, the easiest and cheapest way to get there, and how much is the fare. With that knowledge, you would know if the driver is overpricing you or if you're being led to the wrong way.
  2. Accommodation 101. Let's say you're traveling in Rome. There are lots of accommodations in Rome to choose from, right? But which one would you get? There are lots of rentals in Rome (for example a Rome vacation rental in Spanish Steps), you need to choose which one is safe and which one would allow you to check in even late at night. Why? Well... you're traveling alone, maybe there'll be delays in your traveling there. Just to be safe, in case you arrive earlier or later than the usual check in time, at least you'll be safe for the night and not wandering around the city cold and alone.
  3. IDs all the time. Carry with you any identification wherever you go - in case of emergency.
  4. Walk with confidence. Walk like you know what you're doing, where you're going, and that you've known the place for quite a while now. So that people wouldn't get that hint that you're new to the place and could be lost. Admit it, people would really try to take advantage of your being naive.
  5. Turn off that 'flash'. No. Not your camera flash! (Or maybe when the place you visit told you so, but not we're not talking about that). Don't wear flashy clothes and expensive jewelries. Don't show off your flashy and expensive gadgets without the need for it. Just be a normal traveler. Act and look normal so that you would feel normal - not uncomfortable and scared.
  6. Not a hint of being alone. Never give anybody a hint that you're alone. When asking questions, use a little while lie - tell the stranger you're meeting someone there.
  7. Check everything before you go. Check maps, check transportation schedules, check fares, check almost everything before you leave your accommodation and before heading out to town. Make sure you're ready to take on the outskirts with your smarts and confidence that despite traveling alone, you're not lonely.
